If you’re looking for a job in customer service, it’s important that you have the right personality traits for the position. Not everyone is suited to this type of career, so take a minute to evaluate your own characteristics.
Respect: This is vital. You’ll need to respect the clients that you talk to. Most people can sense when someone looks down on them, so don’t . . . you’ll lose customers. Respect comes in many forms and can be as simple as asking someone’s opinion.
Listening: Anyone who is good at listening will go far in customer service. People need you to listen to what they have to say and one of the biggest complaints about companies is that they just aren’t paying attention to the customers. Listen, then act, and you’ll make people want to work with you again.
Punctuality: If you promise that a product will be ready by a certain date and then continue to push the date back, you’ll rapidly lose the respect and trust of your client. It’s very important to stick to what you say and to provide prompt information in order to keep customers pleased.
Patience: Perhaps the biggest quality that is required in this type of career is patience. It takes it to listen to someone complain about things that are out of your control and then try to calm them down!
Customer service isn’t always easy, but if you have these personality traits, you should be off to a great start.
